Breton aristocrat Vicomte Théodore Hersart de la Villemarqué (1815–1895), author of the Barzaz Breiz, visited south Wales in 1838-1839. At the Eisteddfod of the Abergavenny Cymreigyddion he was made a Bard of the Island of Britain.
